DALIT LIFE IN A TAMIL VILLAGE Posted by Picasa

THE UNTOUCHABLES Posted by Picasa

THE UNTOUCHABLES

Their name evokes images of the wretched of the earth.
The Untouchables are the lowest of the low on
India’s caste ladder.
Still facing violence and discrimination,
they are demanding a share of political
and economic power.
.
.
SAVAD RAHMAN,
THE YOUNG VOICE OF MADHYAMAM
travels to the Keeruppatti village of tamilnadu
to explore what it means to be an Untouchable today.
.
.
kerruppatti, a local village in tamilnadu.
The illtreatment of Dalits in Tamil Nadu,
especially those occupying reserved elective
positions at the village level, continues,
with the indifference of senior officials
at the district level adding to the injustice.
.
.
Four years after Statewide elections were held
for the local bodies, there are still two panchayats
in Madurai district, Keerippatti and Paappakudi,
both reserved for Dalits, where elections cou ld not be held
owing to the tactics resorted by upper caste groups.
.
.
Adding insult to injury, caste Hindus in
Keerippatti reportedly instructed local
shopkeepers not to sell vegetables and milk
to the relatives of the unsuccessful candidate,
P. Poonkodi, fielded by the Dalit Panthers of India (DPI).
.
.
Fifteen families were affected by the act of ostracism,
according to a petition presented to the Tahsildar at
Usilampatti.
.
.
SAVAD RAHMAN, travelled through the ‘cast affected’
keerippatti village. he explain the shocking incidents,
untouchability, and and the fight of few dalits for their rights.
